Although at home in a variety of musical styles, Paul concentrates primarily on Jazz and Improvisation. This has furthered his reputation as one of Irelands most in demand trombone players, performing and recording with a host of different ensembles including the Hothouse Big band, Dublin City Jazz Orchestra (whose forthcoming album will feature one of Paul’s compositions), Cork City Jazz Band, and the Opus Pocus Big Band. As a talented and versatile performer Paul Dunlea has toured throughout Europe and North America, and has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in Jazz, Bobby Watson, Rick Margitza, Marshall Gilkes, Jean Toussaint, John Riley, Kyle Eastwood and Anders Bercrantz.
In 2011 Paul formed his own ensemble – The Paul Dunlea Group – as a creative outlet for his own compositions. The Groups’ recently released debut album ‘bi-polAr’ is full of original compositions and features some of Ireland’s best improvising jazz musicians. Highly regarded saxophonist Nick Roth, Danny Healy on Trumpet/Flugelhorn, Phillip Collins on Keys, Eoin Walsh on Bass and Davie Ryan on Drums, feature as a wonderfully cohesive ensemble that produce melodic and groove driven music fusing influences of Jazz harmony, pop, funk and R&B
